Summary: Claire has been infected by colors in her head after meeting Ethan on New Year's Eve. Greg shows up at her apartment for a date where Claire is all over him, believing Greg is Ethan.
Before he can answer, I grip the lapels of his tweedy suit jacket and kiss him. He just--stands there. This is what he wants. This is what he has wanted since that night. And he just stands there? I force his mouth open with my tongue, drinking him in, tasting all of him--and there is nothing to taste. Nothing to savor. Nothing of him.
I step back; my breathing ragged.
"Claire," he whispers.
My name sounds different. Unfamiliar and uncomfortable. Not of me.
I stare, resisting the need to blink because if I blink, I'll blink him away. I'll lose him again, and he'll be replaced by nothingness. My eyes widen; my eyes cross. Don't blink.
I blink.
I blink myself back to reality. What little of reality I still grasp.
"You're not--"
"I'm not what?"
Greg stands before me. Not the lost soul with the two colors in his head.
I smile sadly and whisper, "I'm sorry."
You're not him.
